This Privacy Policy explains how Landmark ("Landmark", "we", "us") collects, uses, shares and protects your personal information when you use this website, pre-register for the Landmark app, contact us, or use the Landmark mobile app. We process personal information in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA) of South Africa, and we apply equivalent GDPR principles as a courtesy to visitors in other regions.
1. Who we are
Landmark is the responsible party (data controller) for the personal information described in this policy. Landmark is operated as a South African venture. For any privacy query, or to exercise your rights, contact us at support@landmark-app.co.za.
2. Information we collect
On this website
- Pre-registration details: your email address and your chosen platform (iOS or Android) when you sign up to be notified at launch.
- Contact messages: your name, email address and the content of your message when you use our contact form or email us.
- Newsletter sign-ups: your email address if you subscribe to updates.
- Technical and usage data: limited, mostly anonymous information your browser sends automatically (such as device type, browser and pages visited), used to keep the site working and secure.
In the Landmark app
- Account details: your email address, username, chosen display name and optional profile photo (avatar) when you create an account.
- Gameplay data: the photos you capture of landmarks, the location coordinates and timestamps of those captures, your points (XP), tier, rank, streaks, quest and season progress, and your capture history.
- Location data: your device location while you use capture features, used to verify that you are at a landmark. We do not track your location in the background.
- User content: comments, submissions of new landmark suggestions, and other content you choose to share.
- Device and diagnostic data: device model, operating system version, app version and crash information, used to keep the app working.
We do not knowingly collect special categories of personal information.
3. How we use your information
- To create and operate your Landmark account and provide app features (captures, XP, tiers, quests, seasons and leaderboards).
- To verify captures using your location at the time of capture.
- To notify you when Landmark launches and to manage your pre-registration.
- To respond to your contact messages and support requests.
- To send you product updates and news, where you have asked to receive them.
- To operate, secure and improve the website and app, and to prevent cheating and abuse.
- To comply with our legal obligations.
4. Public leaderboards and your display name
Landmark is a game built around public competition. Your display name, avatar, points, rank, tier and capture count are displayed publicly on leaderboards and similar features in the app and on this website.
You choose your own display name. If you choose to use your real first name and surname as your display name, you consent to that name being visible on public leaderboards and rankings, where anyone can see it. If you prefer not to have your real name shown publicly, use an alias or nickname instead — gameplay is unaffected. You can change your display name at any time in the app, and the change applies to leaderboards from that point on.
You may also ask us to remove your entry from public leaderboards entirely by contacting support@landmark-app.co.za.
5. Capture photos and location
Photos you capture at landmarks are uploaded to our image hosting provider and stored against your account. Capture photos and the landmark they belong to may be visible to other users as part of the game (for example on a landmark's capture feed). The precise GPS coordinates of your captures are used for verification and are not displayed publicly as your personal location history.
6. Lawful basis
We rely on the performance of our contract with you to provide the app and its features (including public leaderboards, which are inherent to the game), on your consent (which you may withdraw at any time) for pre-registration, marketing communications and optional features, and on our legitimate interests in operating, securing and improving Landmark. These align with the conditions for lawful processing under POPIA.
7. Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers (operators) who help us run Landmark, under appropriate safeguards:
- Supabase: database, authentication and backend hosting that stores accounts, captures, leaderboards and pre-registration records.
- ImageKit: image storage and delivery for landmark images and capture photos.
- Resend: transactional email delivery (for example pre-registration confirmations and replies to your contact messages).
- Vercel: hosting and delivery of this website.
We may also disclose information where required by law.
8. International transfers
Some of our service providers process data outside South Africa (for example in the European Union and the United States). Where this happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure your information receives a comparable level of protection, consistent with section 72 of POPIA.
9. Retention
- Account and gameplay data: kept while your account is active. If you delete your account, your personal information is deleted or anonymised within a reasonable period, except where we must keep it by law.
- Pre-registration and newsletter data: kept for as long as needed to contact you about the launch and updates, and thereafter only as required by law.
- Contact messages: kept for as long as needed to handle your query and for a reasonable record-keeping period.
You can ask us to delete your details at any time.
10. Security
We apply reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), access controls on our databases, and restricted access to personal data. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, but we work to safeguard your data and will notify you and the Information Regulator of any breach as required by POPIA.
11. Your rights
Under POPIA (and similar laws) you have the right to:
- access the personal information we hold about you;
- request that we correct or delete it;
- object to processing and withdraw consent;
- ask to be removed from public leaderboards (see section 4);
- lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (South Africa).

This site uses a small number of cookies and similar technologies. See our Cookie Policy for details and to manage your preferences.
13. Children
Landmark is not directed at children under 18 without the consent of a competent person (such as a parent or guardian), and we do not knowingly collect children's personal information without such consent.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "last updated" date above reflects the latest version. Material changes will be announced in the app or on this website.
